Common Ridings

The Common Ridings are an integral part of the equestrian – and wider – community in the Scottish Borders. We think everyone should be able to develop the skills to participate in the rideouts at least once in their lives!

We have been teaching people to ride for nearly 40 years. We have been doing the rideouts for even longer! So we know what preparation you need and we know how to provide it.

For complete beginners we recommend starting with a couple of half hour private sessions to establish the basics and build confidence. As soon as it is safe to do so we will take you out of the arena environment and into the hills. When you are ready we will encourage you to join group sessions and hacks, building up to doing one of our weekend two hour hacks or longer picnic rides which will help you develop your stamina, seat and spatial awareness – all of which you will need in spades when it comes to a proper Common Riding. It might take a few months to be Common Riding-ready so don’t leave your preparations too late – if you want to ride in next years’ rideouts you ideally need to make start now.

For those of you who have ridden before but want the best preparation for a return to the rideouts we run a four-session Common Riding refresher package for £90. This involves four hour long lessons, combining schooling and hacking, with a view to building fitness and regenerating what might be some long-forgotten skills! Please call us on 01750 20202 or email info@ianstarkequestriancentre.co.uk to arrange.

Please note our rider weight limit of 15 stone.

Unfortunately we are not usually able to provide hire horses for Common Ridings due to the risk of infection to other horses in the yard. We recommend hiring from Leslie Douglas in Jedburgh – you can contact her direct on 07789 266233.
