Lessons with Ian on his horses

Ian currently has three established horses that he is happy to be able to offer for private lessons by arrangement, and subject to the approval of the Riding Centre instructors.

These horses are:

Butty – a six year old bay Irish Sports Horse gelding who competes in the name ‘Bacon Butty’. Butty has evented to one star level and has, for the past two seasons, led the Duke of Buccleuch Hunt’s field from the Opening Meet. Butty is an intelligent, athletic horse with a cheeky face and a brilliant jump. He likes to get his own way and can have a bit of a teenage-style strop when he doesn’t, but he is a kind and willing horse who loves his job and looks for a fence.

Jill – a ten year old grey Thoroughbred mare by Silver Patriarch who competes in the name ‘Silver Monument’. Jill has evented, point-to-pointed and raced, but more recently went on a three year sabbatical to have two foals – the first by thoroughbred stallion Presenting, and the second by jumping sire Billy Congo. She is the niece of Ian’s old event horse Stanwick Ghost and is owned by the Duchess of Devonshire, who has been an incredible source of support during Ian’s career, both as an owner and friend. Jill has a style all of her own and on the ground can be quite speedy with her legs (front and back) and teeth, but she knows her stuff and will do what she’s told if you ask her nicely. Sometimes.

Diarmuid – a six year old Irish Draught x Thoroughbred dark brown gelding who competes in the name ‘Mr O’Driscoll’. Diarmuid was gifted to Ian and Jenny as a two year old by a friend who was terminally ill, and has since competed up to Novice level with Ian and become a very good hunt horse. He secretly wants to be a showjumper but is not sure how to go about it – maybe Scott Brash will come and see him one day, then he can show off his absolutely phenomenal jump and get the chance to travel round the world.
